A la fin des années 1950, deux étudiants américains, Jim Harvey et Phil Fialer, créent un programme de rencontres, "Happy Families Planning Service". Ils organisent une fête avec 49 femmes et 49 hommes, invités à remplir un questionnaire de façon à établir leur profil psychologique, puis calculent les taux de compatibilités de chaque couple hypothétique. Le premier algorithme de l'amour était né.
