J. R. R. Tolkien, disparu en 1973, fut tout à la fois romancier, poète, essayiste, philologue, professeur de vieil anglais puis de littérature anglaise à l'université d'Oxford. Sous ses airs de grand-père tranquille fumant la pipe, il a déployé une créativité foisonnante. Il a ainsi imaginé tout un monde, la fabuleuse Terre du Milieu, où se côtoient, au fil d'aventures épiques, une myriade de peuples.
